BEGINNER TO BRITISH CHAMPION IN 13 MONTHS

Thinking of starting BJJ at 44? I did.

I was worried about being older, unfit, and honestly, all the bare feet! But I took the plunge, and the beginners’ class was perfect for starting with people at the same level.

I moved on to regular classes, worried about training with more experienced people. But they turned out to be the most helpful, sharing knowledge and supporting me.

I started competing, won a few medals (including gold at the British Open!), and I was hooked.

Now, I can’t imagine my life without BJJ. If you’re thinking about starting, just do it. You’ll get fitter, stronger, more confident, and gain new friends. What’s not to love?

I completed the CC beginner course in March 2022. I already knew that I was ready to commit to Jiu Jitsu and doing the 6 week course set me up with the perfect foundation for my continued journey. Connor has created the perfect introduction for both Gi and No-gi, covering everything you need to begin training with confidence.

Through this course, and with continued training, at CC I was able to compete regularly at white belt, eventually winning the British Championship. I have continued to train consistently after leaving CC, both in the UK and whilst on my travels.

I’m now fortunate enough to have the opportunity to teach my own classes at 10th Planet Koh Tao - the confidence to do this comes from the foundation I received whilst at CC. Having trained at numerous gyms since my time at CC, I can confidently say the teaching and attention to detail is at an incredible standard. But what makes CC truly special is the community - no ego, amazing people and hard rolls.

Cotswold Combat is the perfect place to learn and grow in Jiu Jitsu. The coaching is clear, supportive, and tailored to every level — from complete beginners to advanced students. The atmosphere is welcoming yet focused, with a great balance of drilling, positional work, and live sparring. I’ve felt supported every step of the way, and it’s clear that every individual’s journey is valued here. I couldn’t recommend Cotswold Combat more highly.

FAQ's

Our beginners course includes a Gi and training t shirt so you will have everything you need!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is practiced in the Gi (Kimono/Uniform). ‘NoGi’ refers to the practice of BJJ without the Gi. On our beginners course, we cover three weeks of NoGi training and three weeks of gi training. For NoGi classes, you will need black shorts and a black T-Shirt or Rashguard (without zips) and for Gi classes you will need a white BJJ Gi.

The classes run every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30pm to 8:30pm

BJJ is a full contact martial art. As with any full contact sport, there are risks involved in training. We believe our beginners course is the ideal entry point to avoid injury. A significant part of our beginners course content is based around safe practice.

This is the perhaps the biggest misconception around training BJJ. By training BJJ, you will develop specific cardio and fitness without hours on the treadmill. We never push you beyond your limits as a beginner. Your fitness will not be a limiting factor as a beginner at Cotswold Combat.

Cotswold Combat operate on a membership only basis, starting from £9.30 per class. During the midpoint of your course, we will check in with you to inform you of membership options post course.
